Our Story

In 1932, Bruce V. Smith (1907-1981) and his wife, Ethel R. (Glatfelter) Smith (1907-1994) bought a gas station and general store in Jacobus from Bruce's grandfather, founding the business that we now call Smith Village Home Furnishings. Today, the business still runs on the original principles instituted by Bruce: "When you shop with us... you're shopping with family."

After his initial purchase, Bruce bought adjoining properties on which he launched additional businesses. These included automobile sales, roadside cabin rentals, LP gas (propane) sales, a diner, a grocery store, and a department store which also sold furniture and appliances. As these businesses prospered over the years, Bruce promoted his retail complex as a place to do "one-stop shopping."

At various times the complex also included a barber shop, the town's post office, a ladies' dress shop, and a service station. A customer could buy just about anything with one stop in the little town of Jacobus, and people from all over York County and northern Maryland became regular customers at "Bruce's," as it was known locally.

Overcoming Adversity

The Devastating 1958 Fire

Things looked grim in February of 1958, when a disastrous fire destroyed the department store and office building. But by August that same year, the new department store was completed and in operation, and Bruce renamed the entire complex "Smith Village" to promote the idea of a one-stop shopping center.

Bruce and Ethel decided to pass the business on to their 2 oldest sons and retired in 1967. Donald and Dale had many years of experience working under their father - as did the other 3 children, Susan, Anna Mae and Dallas – who also joined the business in the years following.

In 1977, with more and more department stores popping up in the area, the Smith family decided to narrow their focus to mainly furniture and large appliances, and eliminated the housewares, toys, clothing, jewelry, and sporting goods departments. Updates were made to the building's interior to accommodate the newly expanded furniture and major appliance selection.

Furniture and mattresses made up the bulk of the sales by the mid-1980s, and large appliances were gradually phased out by the end of the 90s. The name was changed to Smith Village Home Furnishings to reflect the new product line up, and an exterior facelift brought the outer appearance into the new millennium and remains to this day.

In 2019, with no one in the younger generation of the Smith family interested in taking over the business, Bruce's children decided to sell their nearly 90-year-old family business to a group of longtime store managers. This closely knit group still maintains the legacy begun so many years ago by our founders.
